A rapidly absorbed supplement of amino acids, taken immediately after training, might be extremely beneficial. A recent study carried out by researchers at Auburn University in the US compared blood levels of amino acids in 10 male subjects (average age 30 years) after each of three possible treatments: eating a mixture of amino acids in their easily absorbed form; eating the same total amount but as whole protein (cottage cheese); and eating a mixture of the two. Each treatment consisted of a similar wide range of amino acids, and totaled about 23g protein, 5g carbohydrate, 2g fat, and also included just 20ml water. Each subject’s diet was also standardized prior to treatment.

Perceptions of power mobility use and safety within residential facilities

Posted by Admin on June 30th, 2009

Perceptions of power mobility use and safety within residential facilities
BACKGROUND: power wheelchairs and medical scooters enhance quality of life by enabling occupation, improving self-esteem and facilitating social interaction. Despite these benefits, the risks associated with power mobility use raise serious concerns in residential facilities. PURPOSE: As there is no gold standard to assess when a client is unsafe, a two-phase study was conducted to develop client-centred guidelines for power mobility use. METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, other residents, staff and family members. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes: 1) the meaning of power mobility, 2) learning the rules of the road, 3) red flags: concerns about safety, and 4) solutions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Given the importance of power mobility, safety measures need to address issues of mobility and safety for power mobility drivers and those around them.

Evaluation of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs using ANSI/RESNA standards

Posted by Admin on June 24th, 2009

Evaluation of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs using ANSI/RESNA standards
OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare performance of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs (PAPAW) (iGLIDE, e-motion, Xtender) on national standards. DESIGN: Engineering performance and safety evaluation. SETTING: A Veteran Affairs and university-based research center. SPECIMENS: Nine PAPAWs. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Static, dynamic stability, brake effectiveness, maximum speed, acceleration, retardation, energy consumption, static, impact, and fatigue strength. RESULTS: There was no significant difference among the 3 models in forward stability. The iGLIDE was the most stable, whereas the e-motion was the least stable model in the rearward stability tests. All PAPAWs performed equally on the slopes of 3 degrees and 6 degrees in the forward and rearward directions. Braking distance was the highest for e-motion (5.64+/-0.28m) and the lowest (1.13+/-0.03m) for the iGLIDE in forward direction. The average equivalent cycles of all PAPAWs were 318,292+/-112,776.6 cycles (n=8) on the fatigue tests. All PAPAWs passed the impact and static strength tests. CONCLUSIONS: The standards of the American National Standards Institute and http://www.easymedonline.com/Mobility-Scooters-s/20.htm, power wheelchairs the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America could act as quality assurance tool for wheelchairs. The standards for wheelchairs were first approved in 1990; after 17 years, exceeding the minimum values in the standards would be a reasonable expectation

The biomechanics of wheelchair propulsion in individuals with and without upper-limb impairment.

Posted by Admin on June 23rd, 2009

The biomechanics of wheelchair propulsion in individuals with and without upper-limb impairment.

We used an instrumented medicare power wheelchairs ergometer and 3D motion analysis system to collect joint kinematic and temporal data, as well as hand rim and joint kinetics, in 47 manual power wheelchairs users (MWCUs) (15 with upper-limb impairment and 32 without upper-limb impairment). The group with upper-limb impairment propelled with a higher stroke frequency and reduced hand-rim contact time, and smaller peak joint angles and joint excursion of the wrist, elbow, and shoulder during the contact phase. They also propelled with a reduced power output and reduced hand-rim propulsive and resultant forces, moments, and joint compressive forces. We concluded that these kinematic and kinetic strategies might be a mechanism for allowing MWCUs with upper-limb impairment to remain independent. Additionally, the reduced joint excursion and reduced magnitude of forces may protect them from the development of secondary upper-limb pathologies.

Add a Colorful Cover Letter to Your CV

Posted by Admin on June 23rd, 2009

Add a Colorful Cover Letter to Your CV
Hiring managers want to know more about you than your CV (curriculum vitaewhich stands for ‘course of life). Therefore, a resume cover letters is a chance to add some current personal details that will provide the hiring manager with a closer look at who you are. Consider CV cover letters as ‘appetizers’to encourage employers to take a moment to get to know you and your personality. Also, a CV cover letter helps to ‘cover’ your CV, to introduce you and your abilities, your experience and interests in the job you’re bidding for prior to the hiring manager reading your CV.

Build Lean Muscles with CytoSport Muscle Milk bodybuilding protein

What Are The Functions Of BCAA’s?

BCAA’s act as nitrogen carriers which assist the muscles in synthesizing other aminos needed for anabolic muscle action. In simpler terms, it is a combining of simpler aminos to form a complex whole muscle tissue1.. Therefore, BCAA’s stimulate production of insulin, the main function of which is to allow circulating blood sugar to be taken up by the muscle cells and used as a source of energy. This insulin production promotes amino acid uptake by the muscle. BCAA’s are both anabolic and anti-catabolic because of their ability to significantly increase protein synthesis, cytosport muscle milk facilitate the release of hormones such as growth hormone (GH), IGF-1, and insulin, and help maintain a favorable testosterone to cortisol ratio.

Effects of respiratory resistance training with a concurrent flow device on wheelchair athletes.

Posted by Admin on June 22nd, 2009

Effects of respiratory resistance training with a concurrent flow device on wheelchair athletes.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of respiratory resistance training (RRT) with a concurrent flow respiratory (CFR) device on respiratory function and aerobic power wheelchairs, http://www.easymedonline.com/Mobility-Scooters-s/20.htm athletes. METHODS: Ten male wheelchair athletes (8 with spinal cord injuries, 1 with a neurological disorder, and 1 with postpolio syndrome), were matched by lesion level and/or track rating before random assignment to either a RRT group (n = 5) or a control group (CON, n = 5). The RRT group performed 1 set of breathing exercises using Expand-a-Lung, a CFR device, 2 to 3 times daily for 10 weeks. Pre/posttesting included measurement of maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), and peak oxygen consumption (V(O2peak)). RESULTS: Repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant group difference in change for MIP from pre- to posttest (P < 0.05). The RRT group improved by 33.0 cm H2O, while the CON group improved by 0.6 cm H2O. Although not significant, the MW increased for the RRT group and decreased for the CON group. There was no significant group difference between V(O2peak) for pre/posttesting. Due to small sample sizes in both groups and violations of some parametric statistical assumptions, nonparametric tests were also conducted as a crosscheck of the findings. The results of the nonparametric tests concurred with the parametric results. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that 10 weeks of RRT training with a CFR device can effectively improve MIP in wheelchair athletes. Further research and a larger sample size are warranted to further characterize the impact of Expand-a-Lung on performance and other cardiorespiratory variables in wheelchair athletes.

The Urine Odor is Gone

Posted by Admin on June 21st, 2009

The Urine Odor is Gone

I bought the most beautiful victorian couch and chair off of ebay, but had to have it shipped from KY to Ohio.. it was everything I wanted.. EVERYTHING.. Perfect color, washable velevet.. everything..HOWEVER, the seller didn’t tell me the couch and chair, esp, was fill with years of human urine… My first clue was when the brand new couch cushions were wrapped in plastic… I tried everything, I finally tore the chair apart, with gloves on, and got rid of anything and everything, stuffing, on down… Next, in my venom, actually took the chair OUTSIDE and HOSED it down, and soaked it for 45 minutes.. washing it with Cheer, and non chlorine bleach.. That was better, but still you could still smell the pee smell, not just a wiff either…. Normally, I would have thrown it out, and called it a day, but this is JUST what I wanted, the style, the color, ALL.. I finally found SCOE 10X, and bought a small bottle.. I used it, and 85 percent of the pee smell is gone, from this foul chair.. This stuf is AMAZING..I ordered a much larger bottle the next day, just last FRI, the day after I got the small one.. And I will keep on using and letting dry, until this chair can be saved…No one will know about my chair except, me, and you reading this, of course!!.. You have no idea how bad this chair was!!! ALSO..My cat, has a PEE corner also.. While doing the chair, I spray that corner too, and NO SMELL THERE now either.. This product should go for a small fortune…It DOES just what it SAYS IT WILL!..THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I SO APPRECIATE IT!! Yes, I finally got the smell of urine off!

Wheelchair propulsion demands during outdoor community ambulation.

Posted by Admin on June 21st, 2009

Wheelchair propulsion demands during outdoor community ambulation.
OBJECTIVE: Quantify manual wheelchair propulsion effort during outdoor community ambulation. DESIGN: Case series. SUBJECTS: Thirteen individuals (12 with SCI, 1 with spina bifida) who were experienced manual wheelchair users and had no current upper extremity injury or pain complaints. METHODS: Measurements were obtained from instrumented wheelchair rims during steady-state propulsion as subjects traversed outdoor concrete sidewalk terrain that included smooth level, aggregate level, and a ramp with a smooth surface. Propulsion effort was assessed using the average propulsion moment, average instantaneous power, and work for both upper extremities. RESULTS: Propulsion effort, captured by the propulsion moment, work and power, varied across ground conditions (p<0.001). Propulsion effort was greater as the rolling resistance increased (i.e., smooth versus aggregate surfaces) and as the inclination angle progressed from level to inclined surfaces. There were no side-to-side differences across ground conditions for the propulsion moment or work. power wheelchairs and http://www.easymedonline.com/Mobility-Scooters-s/20.htm generation was significantly greater on the dominant compared to the non-dominant extremity during the more challenging aggregate surface and ramp conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Propulsion effort varies with demands imposed by different ground conditions. Quantification of wheelchair propulsion demands provides rehabilitations specialists with objective information to guide treatment of patients adapting to manual wheelchair use

Table Tennis

Posted by Admin on June 20th, 2009

Table Tennis

Much like its bigger version, table tennis is played with the same basic rules as Tennis. If you are a sports buff and has devoted quite a number of hours in front of the boob tube watching sports channels, its highly likely that you have watched a couple of games of table tennis

Played in a wooden table, usually green like lawn tennis. table tennis or ping pong as what some people refer to it based on the sound the ball makes as it bounces, utilizes wooden paddles with rubber surfaces and a plastic ball instead of the big rackets and the furry green ball used in Tennis.

Considering powered mobility for individuals with stroke

Posted by Admin on June 20th, 2009

Considering powered mobility for individuals with stroke
medical scooters and power wheelchairs is an option that provides many disabled individuals with a means of locomotion. Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in this country. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of published material that expounds on power mobility as it relates to clients who have had a stroke. We will present the benefits and considerations for choosing power wheelchairs for this client population. A brief review of seating and mobility evaluation and funding considerations is included with an emphasis on specific issues concerning stroke clients. Finally, a call for further research on this topic is presented.
